In January 2020, Prof. David Robert Wallace from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) came to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to discuss ME499 course design which was planned to start in summer vacation this year. Prof. Song and Prof. Wallace are the main leaders of ME499 course design.
Prof. Wallace is an honored professor in MIT, he has a high reputation of innovative education. One of the courses he teaches in MIT, MIT 2.009, named Product Engineering Process, is very popular for students. In MIT 2.009, a group of 12 students will create, develop,and commercialize in a simulated real environment to turn an idea into products. MIT 2.009 is also very popular for the people outside, each year the tickets for MIT 2.009 presentation are hard to grab, and more than 1,000 people including professors, entrepreneurs, experts will watch in the auditorium.
Prof. Wallace gave many suggestions for ME499 course design based on the experience of MIT 2.009 course and Prof. Song Professor Song also put forward some ideas. In the coming months, Prof. Wallace, Professor Song and other staff will work together to complete the course design.
China is vigorously promoting New Engineering Education. This cooperation with MIT will create a New Engineering course with the characteristics of SUSTech.
